Knicks activate Weatherspoon

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- New York Knicks forward Clarence Weatherspoon, who has missed the last 25 games with a partially torn tendon in his right foot, Saturday was activated off the injured list.

Weatherspoon suffered a partial tear of his peroneal tendon late in the third quarter of a 94-70 win over the Golden State Warriors on November 24.

The Knicks lost six straight games to fall to 14-23 and are hoping that the 6-7, 270-pound Weatherspoon can provide some badly needed muscle up front.

New York was to visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night.

Weatherspoon signed with the Knicks as a free agent over the summer and has averaged 10.7 points and 8.1 rebounds in 12 games.

The 31-year-old Weatherspoon, who played in Cleveland last year, is in his 10th NBA season. Entering 2001-02, he played in 688 of a possible 706 games, never missing more than six in a season.

Weatherspoon was selected by the 76ers with the ninth pick in the 1992 draft and spent 5 1/2 seasons in Philadelphia. He drew comparisons to Charles Barkley early in his career, but has averaged more than 10 points per game only once since 1997.

To make room for Weatherspoon, the Knicks placed swingman Larry Robinson on the injured list for the third time this season with tendinitis.
