Red Sox sign Doug Mirabelli

BOSTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox avoided salary arbitration with Doug Mirabelli Wednesday by signing the veteran catcher to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Mirabelli was acquired from the Texas Rangers on June 12 and batted .270 with nine homers and 26 RBI in 54 games for the Red Sox. He threw out 27 of 64 runners attempting to steal and has nailed 37 percent of those runners over the last three seasons.

Mirabelli spent the previous five seasons with the San Francisco Giants and is a career .231 hitter. He was a member of the 1990 NCAA championship team at Wichita State.
