Tigers reach terms with eight players

DETROIT, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Catcher Mitch Meluskey and righthander Seth Greisinger, who both missed all of the 2001 season, were among eight players to agree Saturday to terms on one-year deals with the Detroit Tigers.

Meluskey was acquired from the Houston Astros during the 2000 Winter Meetings but underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder on April. Meluskey, 28, hit .300 with 14 home runs and 69 RBI with Houston in 2000.

Greisinger, 26, showed promise when he went 6-9 with a 5.12 in his rookie season of 1998, but he has not pitched in the major leagues since undergoing elbow surgery on June 15, 1999.

Righthander Victor Santos, surprising as a rookie in 2001, also agreed to terms. The 25-year-old went 2-2 with a 3.30 ERA in 33 appearances, including seven starts.

Minor league pitchers Tim Kalita, Shane Loux, Fernando Rodney, Joe Valentine and Andy Van Hekken also agreed to terms Saturday.
