Two seeds fall at Canberra

CANBERRA, Australia, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Two of the top four seeds were ousted Sunday at the Canberra Women's Classic.

Third seed Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain lost a three-set struggle to Australian wild card Bryanne Stewart, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, while American Samantha Reeves bounced fourth-seeded Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.

No. 7 Nathalie Dechy of France avoided her fellow seeds' fate with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Italy's Adriana Serra-Zanetti.

Lilia Osterloh of the United States dispatched Jana Kandarr of Germany, 6-3, 6-3, to reach a second-round meeting with Reeves and Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic cruised past Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-2.

Also, Greece's Eleni Danillidou held off Slovakia's Maja Matevzic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and Evie Dominikovic defeated Annabel Ellwood, 6-0, 6-3, in a battle of Australians.
