North Carolina St. 81, Virginia 74

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Anthony Grundy scored 19 points and freshman Julius Hodge added 18 Saturday as North Carolina State handed fourth-ranked Virginia its first loss of the season, 81-74.

The Wolfpack also claimed their first win in Charlottesville since 1988 and won for just the third time in the last 25 meetings with the Cavaliers.

Travis Watson had 20 points for Virginia (9-1, 0-1 ACC), which began the day as one of four unbeaten teams in the country and ended it with its seventh straight loss in an ACC opener.

The Wolfpack may end up cracking the top 25 after rebounding from Sunday's 72-65 loss to sixth-ranked Maryland in their ACC opener. They also have beaten No. 10 Syracuse on the road this season.

Freshman Ilian Etimov scored 15 points and Clifford Crawford had 11 for North Carolina State, which made 11 of 20 attempts from three-point range and shot 50 percent overall.

Roger Mason Jr. and Chris Williams had 18 points apiece for the Cavaliers, who were seven of 21 from behind the arc and shot 47 percent from the field.
