The 24-year-old Argentine won his first career ATP title last April at the Morocco claycourt event. He also displayed his skills on all surfaces during 2001, advancing to the finals at 's-Hertogenbosch on grass, Stuttgart on hard courts and Vienna on clay.

In the other semifinal, unseeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand defeated fourth seeded Andrei Pavel, 6-4, 6-4. The Romanian was seeking his second career title, having won the Tennis Masters Series at Montreal in August.

It was another upset win for Srichaphan, who also knocked off No. 5 Max Mirnyi of Belarus in the opening round. He will be competing in his first ATP final. The 22-year-old reached the quarterfinals at the Queen's Club grasscourt event and Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
