Miami unanimous No. 1 in coaches poll

ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- The Miami Hurricanes, No. 1 since early October, were named unanimous national champions in the final coaches poll Friday, following their 37-14 rout of Nebraska in the Rose Bowl Thursday night.

Miami (12-0) received all 60 first-place votes, claiming its fifth national championship and first since 1991. The Hurricanes also were a unanimous pick in the media poll.

Oregon (11-1), which was hoping a Miami loss would create a split national championship, finished second, followed by Florida (10-2), Tennessee (11-2) and Texas (11-2).

Oregon was an easy winner in the Fiesta Bowl, posting a 38-16 victory over Colorado, which drubbed Nebraska, 62-36, in the Cornhuskers' regular-season finale. But, a loss to Stanford in October kept the Ducks out of the national championship game.

Nebraska, which ended the season with its first two-game losing streak since 1990, dropped from fourth to seventh in the final poll.

Florida jumped two spots after a 56-23 thrashing of Maryland in the Orange Bowl. Tennessee climbed four notches after routing Michigan, 45-17, in the Citrus Bowl.

Texas also moved up four spots after rallying for a 47-43 triumph over Washington in the Holiday Bowl.

Oklahoma (11-2) starts the second five, followed by Nebraska,Louisiana State (10-3), Colorado (10-3) and Maryland (10-2).

LSU, the Southeastern Conference champion, climbed into the top 10 after defeating the Big Ten Conference champion Illinois, 47-34, in the Sugar Bowl.

Washington State (10-2) is 11th, followed by Illinois (10-2),

South Carolina (9-3), Syracuse (10-3) and Florida State (8-4), which defeated Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl but finished outside the top four for the first time in 15 years.

South Carolina edged Ohio State, 31-28, in the Outback Bowl to win consecutive bowl games for the first time in school history.

Conference USA champion Louisville (11-2), which won a school-record 11 games, finished 16th after beating Brigham Young, 28-10, in the Liberty Bowl.

BYU (12-2), which campaigned hard for a berth in the BCS before losing at Hawaii in its regular-season finale, slipped from 17th to 24th.

Completing the top 20 are Stanford (9-3), Virginia Tech (8-4), Washington (8-4) and Michigan (8-4).

Two Mid-American Conference teams finished in the top 25 -- Marshall (11-2) at 21st and Toledo (10-2) at 22nd. Marshall produced the greatest comeback in bowl history, rallying from a

30-point halftime deficit to defeat East Carolina, 64-61, in double overtime in the GMAC Bowl.

Completing the poll are No. 23 Boston College (8-4) and No. 25 Georgia (8-4).

Fresno State, which lost to Michigan State, 44-35, in the Silicon Valley Classic, dropped out along with Ohio State.
