El Aynaoui, Mantilla reach Qatar final

DOHA, Qatar, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Rainer Schuettler had little time to enjoy his upset of Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

One day after knocking off the top-seeded Russian, Schuettler himself was ousted by No. 6 Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals of the $1 million Qatar Open on Friday.

Schuettler, the 1999 winner and seventh seed from Germany, dismissed Kafelnikov in straight sets on Thursday, but was unable to follow up that performance against El Aynaoui.

No. 5 Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic will not make a return trip to the finals here after falling to eighth-seeded Felix Mantilla, 6-3, 6-1, in Friday's other semifinal.

Ulihrach lost to Marcelo Rios in last year's championship match and fell to another Spaniard this time around.

El Aynaoui is looking to win his second tournament in five months. He won the Gelsor Open in September at Bucharest, Romania.

Mantilla also enjoyed his lone triumph of 2001 in September, capturing the International Championship of Sicily at Palermo.
