Calgary 2, Edmonton 2 (OT)

CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Steve Begin scored 7 1/2 minutes into the third period Monday night as the Calgary Flames rallied for a 2-2 tie with the Edmonton Oilers.

Begin skated to the goal line near the left boards and fired a shot, barely getting the puck over goaltender Tommy Salo's right shoulder.

Calgary blanked Edmonton on opening night, 1-0, but the Oilers avenged the loss on Wednesday with a 3-2 triumph.

Salo made 33 saves, but is 2-2-1 in his last five starts. He turned away four shots in the extra period, including a pair by Marc Savard and another by Jarome Iginla to salvage the tie.

Anson Carter nearly scored his second goal of the night on an overtime breakaway but was stopped by Roman Turek, who made 25 saves.

Carter gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead with 40 seconds to go in the first period by finishing off a goalmouth scramble. Mike Comrie poked the puck to Carter at the left side of the net, from where he flipped it over the sprawled goalie.
