AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Texas will be without leading scorer and rebounder Chris Owens for the rest of the season after the senior forward suffered a torn right ACL in Saturday's 71-61 loss at Utah.
Owens, a fifth-year senior, had an MRI Monday that revealed the extent of the injury. Athletic trainer Brian Farr said Owens will undergo surgery in two to four weeks and faces six to nine months of rehabilitation.
"I always have to be thankful for what I do have, which is a wonderful family and the opportunity to earn my degree this spring," Owens said. "I feel frustrated in that I let my team down, but I know I'll do everything I can to support them for the rest of the year."
The 6-7, 238-pound Owens was just named one of 30 midseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award. He was averaging 15.8 points and 7.4 rebounds in 11 games and led the Longhorns with 21 blocked shots.
Saturday's loss ended a six-game winning streak for Texas (7-4), which hosts Texas-Pan American on Wednesday, three nights before opening the Big 12 Conference schedule at Oklahoma State.
