SD Chargers fire Mike Riley

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- The San Diego Chargers on Monday fired head coach Mike Riley and all but one member of his coaching staff.

Riley, 48, coached the Chargers for three seasons and compiled a record of 14-34. His winning percentage of .292 was the second lowest in club history for any Chargers coach with at least one full season.

The only assistant who wasn't fired was offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who has three years left on his contract. Riley will be paid for the final two years of his contract, a total $1.5 million.

"It came down to one bottom line and that's winning football games," general manager John Butler said at a news conference Monday. "Unfortunately that didn't take place this year and in previous years."

This season the Chargers won five of their first seven games, but never won another game. They completed their season with a 25-22 loss to Seattle that dropped their record to 5-11.

The Chargers will be searching for their fourth head coach since Bobby Ross left in 1996.
