EAST LANSING, Mich., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The seventh-ranked Spartans received a rare test at the Breslin Center Saturday, overcoming Andre Barrett's career-high 24 points to extend the nation's longest homecourt winning streak to 53 games with a 68-64 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates.
Michigan State's average margin of victory during the winning streak is 21 points per game. Only eight of the 53 contests have been decided by less than 10 points.
The Spartans (9-3) appeared to be in control, opening a 62-49 lead on Taylor's three-pointer with 4:41 left. But Barrett rallied the Pirates (6-4), scoring eight points in the final two minutes.
Three times in the final minute Barrett got inside for layups that pulled Seton Hall within two points. But Taylor, who scored 18 points, hit four free throws in the final 12 seconds to hold off the Pirates.
The Spartans have won seven of their last eight since dropping consecutive games against ranked opponents in the Preseason NIT.
Seton Hall suffered its second straight loss and dropped to 0-3 against ranked opponents this season. The Pirates were coming off a surprising 71-68 setback to La Salle.
