KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Jean-Pierre Vidal of France came from fourth place after the first run Saturday to capture a World Cup slalom, his first victory ever on the circuit.

Vidal finished .75 of a second ahead of Austria's Mario Matt while Croatia's Ivica Kostelic was third, .95 of a second off the pace.

Vidal has challenged this season, finishing third in Aspen and fourth in Madonna di Campiglio. His victory climaxed an amazing comeback from torn knee ligaments suffered in 1999 in a training fall.
