I-AA Championship: Montana 13, Furman 6

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Fueled by an outstanding defense, the top-seeded Montana Grizzlies won their second Division 1-AA national championship Friday night with a 13-6 decision over No. 3 Furman.

Montana (15-1) has won two of its last four trips to the final, also beating Marshall, 22-20, in 1985. The Grizzlies fell in last year's title game to Georgia Southern, 27-25.

The win gave Montana coach Joe Glenn his third national title. Glenn, who has a 28-3 record in two years at Montana, also won consecutive Division II titles at Northern Colorado in 1996-97.

John Edwards' two-yard run capped a 16-play, 99-yard drive and gave the Grizzlies a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter and the defense made it stand up. Chris Snyder kicked a pair of field goals for Montana.

Furman dropped to 1-2 in championship games. The Paladins captured their lone title in 1988 with a 17-12 victory over Georgia Southern.
