New Jersey 2, Ottawa 0

OTTAWA, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Hours after being named to the Canadian Olympic team, Martin Brodeur made 39 saves Saturday night en route to his 300th career win and 52nd shutout as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Ottawa Senators, 2-0.

Saturday morning, Team Canada general manager Wayne Gretzky named Brodeur one of his three goaltenders for the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Brodeur made the decision look like a wise one.

Brodeur became the youngest goaltender ever to reach 300 wins, doing it in 29 years, 243 days. Terry Sawchuk had been the youngest at 30 years, 42 days.

A two-time All-Star and former Calder Trophy winner, Brodeur also became the third-fastest to 300 wins in terms of games, doing so in 547. Only Jacques Plante (524) and Andy Moog (543) were quicker.

Brodeur reached the milestone on one of his busiest days of the season. He had gone 14 games without facing more than 27 shots and had seen more than 30 just once in 28 appearances.
