Indians name new personnel chief

CLEVELAND, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians on Monday named Steve Lubratich, who served as assistant general manager with the Detroit Tigers for the last seven years, as their director of player personnel.

Lubratich was an assistant to Tigers General Manager Randy Smith since 1995, but Smith lost most of his power when Detroit named Dave Dombrowski as team president last month.

"We are very excited to add an individual as talented as Steve Lubratich into the Indians organization," said Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro. "Steve brings a vast amount of professional baseball experience as both a player, manager, scout and front office member, and is widely respected within the baseball industry."

Shapiro replaced John Hart as Indians general manager after the 2001 season.
