WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Peter Bondra recorded his 398th and 399th career goals Friday night, leading the Washington Capitals to a 6-2 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes in the opener of a home-and-home series.

Bondra opened the scoring four minutes into the first period when he tapped a rebound from the right side past goaltender Arturs Irbe, who was caught out of postition at the top of the crease.

Bondra's second, the eventual game-winner, came on a one-timer set up by defenseman Sergei Gonchar.

Gonchar, who missed Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Buffalo with an unknown injury, also picked up a goal in his return.

Adam Oates recorded his 1,300th point with an assist on Gonchar's goal.

Dmitri Khristich, Ulf Dahlen and Oates also scored for the Capitals, who snapped a three-game winless (0-2-1) streak.

Eric Cole and Ron Francis scored for Carolina.
