Nevada extends coach's contract

RENO, Nev., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Despite a total of five victories in his first two seasons at the helm, Nevada football coach Chris Tormey had his contract extended Friday through the 2003 season.

The Wolfpack went 3-8 this season, completing their campaign with a 48-31 victory at Texas-El Paso last Saturday. They were 2-10 in their first season under Tormey, who had one year remaining on his initial contract.

"We have a huge investment in our football program and I want Chris to know we remain optimistic," athletic director Chris Ault said.

Tormey was hired in December 1999 after compiling a 33-23 record at his alma mater, Idaho. He led the Vandals to their only postseason appearance -- a victory over Southern Mississippi in the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl.

"I appreciate the confidence Chris Ault and the administration have shown me and in the direction we're taking this program," Tormey said. "We made big strides this year and we expect to continue to make big strides in the future."

Prior to taking over at Idaho, the 56-year-old Tormey was part of three straight Rose Bowl squads as an assistant at Washington. During his 11-year tenure in Seattle, he coached in 10 bowl games.
