Edmonton 2, Anaheim 0

ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Jussi Markkanen made 27 saves in his first NHL start and Georges Laraque and Shawn Horcoff scored Wednesday night as the Edmonton Oilers blanked the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 2-0.

Markkanen, a fifth-round pick in the 2001 draft, was spectacular, making a majority of his saves while Edmonton was shorthanded. A 26-year-old native of Finland, Markkanen was on Edmonton's opening-night roster but was sent to Hamilton of the American Hockey League, where he was 2-2-0 before being recalled on Nov. 5.

Anaheim was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.

The Ducks had their best scoring chances just 34 seconds into the second period. With Eric Brewer off for cross-checking, Anaheim kept the puck in the Oilers' zone, but Markkanen made a glove save on Paul Kariya's one-timer from the slot.

Anaheim is 1-8-2 in its last 11 games, going 3-for-56 on the power play and totaling only 18 goals in that span.

Edmonton got the only goal it needed when Laraque dumped the puck in the right corner, picked it up and raced past Anaheim defenseman Jason York before beating Steve Shields.

It was Laraque's first point in 13 career games against the Ducks.
