Tribe's Fryman has surgery

CLEVELAND, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Travis Fryman, hindered by injures in two of the last three seasons, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday night, the team announced Wednesday.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Louis Keppler and Dr. Mark Schickendantz in Cleveland's Lutheran Hospital. Minor fraying in and around Fryman's throwing shoulder was repaired.

Fryman missed the first two months of this season due to right shoulder and elbow discomfort. He batted .263 with three home runs and 38 RBI in 98 games for Cleveland, which won the American League Central for the sixth time in seven years.

The 32-year-old Fryman enjoyed his best offensive season in 2000 when he hit .321 with 22 home runs and 106 RBI in 155 games. He also won the Gold Glove Award. In 1999, Fryman was limited to just 85 games as he spent two stints on the disabled list due to back spasms and a torn ligament in his right knee.

Fryman is scheduled to begin a throwing program in January and is expected to be back for the start of spring training.
