Three named Doak Walker finalists

DALLAS, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Luke Staley of Brigham Young, Bruce Perry of Maryland and Travis Stephens of Tennessee have been named finalists for the Doak Walker Award.

The winner of the award, gven to the nation's top running back, will be announced Dec. 6.

Staley, a junior from Tualatin, Ore., leads the nation in scoring with 15.4 points per game. He has helped pace the seventh-ranked Cougars to a perfect 11-0 record and set school records with 28 touchdowns and 1,433 rushing yards.

Perry, a sophomore from Philadelphia, helped Maryland to its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship since 1985, rushing for 1,242 yards and 10 touchdowns. He had five 100-yard games during the season.

Stephens, a senior from Clarksville, Tennessee, leads the Southeastern Conference in rushing with 1,201 yards and has eight touchdowns.
