Mavs make three moves

DALLAS, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Beset by ailments to three players, the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday signed journeyman forward Johnny Newman, waived center Ruben Wolkowyski and placed guard Greg Buckner on the injured list with a sore left knee.

Newman, who turns 38 on Wednesday, has played for six teams during a 15-year career. He spent last season with the New Jersey Nets and averaged 10.9 points on 42 percent shooting while playing all 82 games.

The 6-7, 210-pound Newman has been durable, playing every game in six of his last seven seasons, including the last 217 since the 1997-98 campaign. He has career averages of 11.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 1,112 games with New York, Charlotte, Denver, Milwaukee and two stints apiece with Cleveland and New Jersey.

Wolkowyski, a 28-year-old from Argentina, never saw action for Dallas while spending the first 14 games of the season on the injured list with a sprained right ankle.

Buckner injured his ankle at the beginning of the season and has played just eight games, averaging 4.0 and 3.5 rebounds. He suffered the knee injury in Saturday's 119-104 victory over Phoenix.
