Real Madrid wins in Champions League

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Real Madrid and Arsenal continued down familiar paths in Champions League matches Wednesday.

Real Madrid received a pair of goals from Fernando Morientes as the 2000 champions and Spanish League mainstays rallied for a 3-2 victory over Sparta Prague in a Group C match.

At La Coruna, Spain, Arsenal lost its sixth straight Champions League road match with a 2-0 setback to Deportivo Coruna.

Morientes' second goal of the match came in the 74th minute and just two minutes after Libor Sionko beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas for the tying tally. Morientes put a rebound of a shot by Roberto Carlos past Petr Cech.

Earlier, Real opened a pair of leads on goals by 1998 World Cup hero Zinedine Zidane and Morientes. Sparta equalized each time as Sionko set up Ratislav Michalik in the 30th minute before making it 2-2 in the second half.

Real has won this prestigious tournament eight times, including the 2000 title. That year, it was led by Casillas, who was tested often in this one.

The victory gave Real early control of the group as FC Porto and Panathinaikos played to a scoreless draw.

Arsenal wasted no time in marching to its latest road setback, allowing two goals in the first 25 minutes. The English Premiership squad put up very little fight after intermission.

Deportivo received goals from Dutchman Roy Makaay in the ninth minute and Diego Tristan in the 25th minute. Makaay's goal came off a giveaway by Swedish international Fredrik Ljungberg and Tristan's tally was a blast from 20 yards that beat 'keeper Richard Wright.

Wright, who had been inserted some time ago for the injured David Seaman, was replaced by Stuart Taylor.

The other Group D match in Turin, Italy between host Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen was postponed due to fog. It is possible the match could be played Nov. 28.
