Before coming to SMU, Cavan coached at East Tennessee State for five seasons, going 30-27 from 1992-96. He also posted a 37-22-2 record at Valdosta State from 1986 to 1991. Cavan was a quarterback at Georgia and was an assistant there from 1975 to 1985
