Montreal 3, Nashville 1

MONTREAL, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Brian Savage and Oleg Petrov scored in the first 10 minutes of the opening period and Jose Theodore made the lead hold up as the Montreal Canadiens snapped a five-game winless streak Thursday night with a 3-1 victory over the Nashville Predators.

The goals by Savage and Petrov staked Montreal to an early 2-0 lead and the Canadiens were content to play conservative thereafter, registering just 13 shots.

After Greg Johnson halved the deficit 2:27 into the second period, Nashville pressed for the equalizer throughout the third period.

But Theodore turned back the Predators with 17 of his 31 in the final 20 minutes and also had some luck on his side as Nashville defensemen Andy Delmore and Kimmo Timonen hit goalposts on the same power play midway through the third period.

Montreal's Andreas Dackell put away the contest with an unassisted goal with 5:05 remaining. He picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated around Delmore and scored on a backhander that caromed in off the post.

Mike Dunham stopped just 10 shots for the Predators, who were playing their first game since Saturday's 4-1 triumph over Dallas.
