Rookie wins on European Tour

SARDINIA, Italy, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Rookie Gregory Havret became the second Frenchman to win on European Tour this year Sunday when he captured his first title at the Italian Open.

Havret was able to perform under the pressure of the closing holes to fire a final round of 3-under 69 for a winning total of 20-under 268.

Havret finished one in front of Bradley Dredge, who shot a final round 69. Defending champion Ian Poulter, Diego Borrego, Shaun Webster and Mark shared third at 271.

Roe climbed from 131st on the money list to 111th to retain his playing privileges for an 18th season on the European Tour. Christian Cevaer held on to the 115th and final qualifying place after holding off the challenges of those behind him by finishing in a tie for 38th.

The week, however, belonged to Havret. He picked up three birdies on the back nine to fight off the challenge from Dredge. The other Frenchman to win on the tour this year was Thomas Levet, who captured the British Masters.

"It was very, very hard," said Havret. "I have never known this kind of pressure before. It feels so good. I didn't expect to win in my first season. My goal was to keep my card. I've won this week, but I didn't think it was possible."
