Billy Williams joins Cubs front office

CHICAGO, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs Thursday named Hall of Famer Billy Williams as a special assistant to the president.

Williams, 62, spent his club-record 31st year in a Cubs uniform this past season, serving as first base coach. It was his 15th season as a member of the coaching staff, tying a team mark.

Over 18 major league seasons, including 16 with the Cubs, Williams hit .290 with 2,711 hits, 426 home runs and 1,475 RBI while being named to six All-Star teams.

On July 26, 1987, Williams was inducted into the Hall of Fame. On Aug. 13, 1987, the Cubs retired his uniform No. 26.

Williams joined the organization in 1956 and made his major league debut in 1959. He played for the club from 1959-74 and had three stints on the coaching staff (1980-82, 1986-87, 1992-2001).
