Bettis named AFC player of the month

NEW YORK, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis and Denver Broncos cornerback Deltha O'Neal were named Thursday as the AFC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month for October.

San Diego Chargers kick returner Ronney Jenkins earned special team honors.

Bettis had 78 carries for 470 yards and three touchdowns in a 4-0 month for the Steelers, who lead the AFC Central at 5-1. He recorded three 100-yard games and also threw a touchdown pass in winning his third career Player of the Month award.

O'Neal recorded 21 tackles and a league-high six interceptions in a 2-2 month for the Broncos. On Oct. 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, he tied an NFL record with four interceptions. He also had two against New England on Oct. 28.

O'Neal, who also returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown against Seattle on Oct. 14, earned his first Player of the Month honor.

Jenkins returned 17 kickoffs for 527 yards and one touchdown for the Chargers, who split four October games.He garnered his first Player of the Month honor.
