Henman wins Swiss Indoor title

BASEL, Switzerland, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Continuing his dominant play in Sunday's final, Tim Henman overwhelmed local favorite Roger Federer, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, to capture the $1 million Swiss Indoors title for the second time in four years.

The second-seeded Henman, who took home the top prize of $137,000, displayed astonishing form throughout the tournament, dropping just 23 games in his five straight-sets victories.

The British No. 1 -- a 1998 winner and 1999 runner-up here-- not only added a second trophy to his 2001 resume after his Copenhagen triumph in March, but also downed Federer for the fourth time in as many career meetings.

In their previous battle at the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July, Henman prevailed in four sets.

Sunday's victory signaled Henman's determination to qualify for the season-ending Masters Cup in Sydney, where only the top eight in the world are invited. He is competing with Tommy Haas of Germany, Sebastien Grosjean of France, Marat Safin of Russia and Federer for the last berth.

Federer, the runner-up here for the second straight year, won his first career title in February at the Milan Indoors. But the Basel native has lost two ATP finals since, also falling in the championship match of the ABN/AMRO World Tennis tournament at Rotterdam.

The 20-year-old Swiss player's biggest win came at Wimbledon this year, when he announced his arrival on the world scene by upsetting seven-time champion Pete Sampras at the All-England Club.
