TORONTO, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Vince Carter outdueled Michael Jordan in their first meeting Thursday night, scoring 18 of his 31 points in the first quarter and taking over the game with Alvin Williams in the third period to carry the Toronto raptors past the Washington Wizards, 113-96.
Known as "Air Canada," Carter made 10 of 23 shots, including four of seven from three-point range, and was perfect in seven attempts from the line. He also had five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Washington had a 70-69 lead with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter when Williams made a three-pointer to spark an 11-1 run that gave the Raptors the lead for good. Williams scored six points during the spurt and Carter five.
Williams finished with 17 points and dished out five assists.
Jordan scored half his 22 points in the first quarter and made just five of 17 shots. He did most of his damage from the line, where he was 12 of 12.
Antonio Davis had 20 points and seven rebounds and Tracy Murray scored 15 points for Toronto (5-1).
Hakeem Olajuwon scored just two points, but grabbed 15 rebounds and had two blocks in 24 minutes. Jerome Williams added 12 points and four rebounds.
Rookie Carlos Arroyo had six points and seven assists in 24 minutes for the Raptors. First-round pick Michael Bradley was scoreless in three minutes.
Toronto's Chris Childs sat out with a sore back and Dell Curry was sidelined with a sore left hamstring.
Courtney Alexander scored 20 points for Washington (1-5), which committed 18 turnovers. Chris Whitney added 12 points and Tyrone Nesby chipped in 10.
Kwame Brown, the top overall pick in the draft, had one point, four rebounds and three assists in 18 minutes. He missed his only shot and committed three turnovers.
Rookie Bobby Simmons had six points and three rebounds in 15 minutes.
