FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Troy Dayak's goal four minutes into overtime Wednesday night gave the San Jose Earthquakes a 1-0 victory over the punchless Miami Fusion and a berth in the MLS championship game.
San Jose will play Los Angeles for the league title in Columbus next Sunday.
The Earthquakes were shut out, 1-0, in the opener of the semifinal series, but rebounded with a pair of shutouts as they used their trademark defense. San Jose allowed a league-low 29 goals during the season.
After a corner kick from Richard Mulrooney, Fusion defender Carlos Llamosa kept the ball live long enough to allow Dayak to get a head on it and nod it into the net past Nick Rimando.
Miami played the last 13 minutes with 10 men after Ian Bishop's ejection in the 81st minute.
With six minutes left in regulation time, the Fusion appeared to have scored on a goal by Johnny Torres, who was clearly three yards offside. The call did not sit well with Lockhart Stadium fans, who rained bottles onto the field and at referees.
The crowd of 11,242 was treated to a solid soccer match nothing like the rough-and-tumble brawls of the first two games. San Jose's defense was not really tested by Miami.
The Fusion was hampered by the loss of Bishop, who collected two yellow cards. Television replays clearly Bishop had not touched Jeff Agoos, the man he had supposedly fouled. Bishop threw his jersey at referee Kevin Terry in disgust.
