Memphis signs Williams to extension

MEMPHIS, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The Memphis Grizzlies signed talented but troubled guard Jason Williams to a contract extension Wednesday.

Terms were not disclosed. Williams will make just over $2 million this season and could have become a restricted free agent July 1.

The signing is a bit of a risky one for the Grizzlies, who became the first NBA team to move in 16 years when they left Vancouver after last season.

A flashy player with a knack for getting into trouble on and off the court, Williams was acquired from Sacramento in a four-player draft day deal that sent point guard Mike Bibby to the Kings.

Williams finished his third season with the Kings sitting out the fourth quarters of playoff games. After Sacramento was swept out of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers, Williams suggested it would be better if he moved on.

The Kings obliged and sent him to the Grizzlies, who are trying to rebuild in their new city after six lost seasons in Canada.

"We are thrilled to reach an agreement with Jason," Grizzlies general manager Billy Knight said. "We expect him to take the next steps of what should be a very successful and long NBA career and help us develop a high-quality team in Memphis for years to come."

Williams averaged 9.4 points, 5.4 assists and 1.22 steals last season. He has been selected as the Grizzlies' co-captain with forward Grant Long.

"I was raised in West Virginia and now I feel I am home again," Williams said. "Three weeks ago, my son was born at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, and this is where I want him to grow up. The people of Memphis have made me feel welcome and I am glad to be part of the community."

In his brief career, he has been suspended by the NBA for violation of the league's substance abuse policy and fined for directing racist remarks at an Asian fan in Golden State.
