Calgary 4, Dallas 3 (OT)

DALLAS, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Defenseman Denis Gauthier scored a shorthanded goal with 1:55 left in the third period and Craig Conroy got the game-winner 4:20 into overtime Saturday night as the surprising Calgary Flames rallied for a 4-3 triumph over the Dallas Stars.

Calgary trailed by a goal when defenseman Toni Lydman was penalized for holding with 2:53 to go in regulation. But the Flames, who were next-to-last in the NHL last season with only three shorthanded tallies, scored off an odd-man rush.

Rookie Scott Nichol carried into the Dallas zone on the right side and slid a cross-ice pass to Gauthier, who moved to the top of the left faceoff circle before beating goaltender Ed Belfour for his first goal of the season.

In the final minute of overtime, Roman Turek came up with a big save and Calgary counterattacked. Dean McAmmond skated down the left side and flipped a pass in front that was deflected by Conroy. Belfour made the stop, but Conroy pushed the puck under the goalie's right pad and just across the goal line for his second of the season.

The win capped a 2-1-0 road trip for the Flames and helped Turek improve to 4

2 lifetime against the team for which he played from 1996-99.

Mike Modano scored his first two goals of the season for the Stars, who have lost two in a row at the new American Airlines Center.
