Molik wins in Kiwi upset

SHANGHAI, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Alicia Molik, the highest-ranked Australian woman in the world, upset third seed Tamarine Tanasugarn on Thursday in the second round of the Kiwi Open tennis event.

Molik upended her Thai opponent, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, to secure a berth in the quarterfinals, where she may end up facing countrywoman Rachel McQuillan, who met Yoon Jeong Cho in the second round.

McQuillan will face Yoon Jeong Cho in the second round.

Nicole Pratt also advanced Thursday, upsetting ninth seed Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3,

A third seeded player fell Thursday as Stephanie Foretz of France knocked off countrywoman Nathalie Dechy of France, the eighth seed, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the quarterfinals, Foretz will face top-seeded Monica Seles of the United States, who advanced Wednesday with an easy win over Saori Obata of Japan.
