PHOENIX, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Curt Schilling struck out nine in a dominant three-hitter and Steve Finley's RBI single in the fifth inning accounted for the game's lone run Tuesday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 1-0, in Game One of their National League Division Series.

Schilling faced just five batters over the minimum and needed just 101 pitches to complete his gem. He was at his best in the ninth, retiring the heart of the Cardinals' lineup in order to complete his second career postseason shutout.

The 34-year-old righthander, who made $6.5 million this year, walked just one in his first postseason appearance since tossing a two-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies in Game Five of the 1993 World Series.

With the game scoreless in the fifth, Damian Miller was hit by a pitch from Cardinals starter Matt Morris. Schilling sacrificed and one out later Finley, who endured a sub-par regular season, singled up the middle for the game's only run.

In his first postseason start, Morris nearly matched Schilling, allowing one run and six hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out six.
