Michigan 20, Penn State 0

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Legendary coach Joe Paterno and his Penn State program sank to new depths Saturday with a 20-0 Big Ten Conference loss to No. 15 Michigan.

It was the first home shutout loss in Paterno's storied career.

"Happy Valley" is anything but as the Nittany Lions have lost their first four games for the first time in the program's history.

It also marks the first four-game losing streak for Paterno, who remains one win shy of Bear Bryant's Division I-A mark of 323 coaching victories.

Penn State (0-4, 0-3 Big Ten) was inept throughout, particularly in the first half, when it surrendered four sacks and managed minus-6 rushing yards. It moved the ball a bit better in the second half but was held scoreless for the first time since 1965. Paterno took over the following year.

Hayden Epstein gave Michigan a 6-0 lead with field goals of 29 and 41 yards in the game's first 17 minutes. John Navaree then hit Marquise Walker with a 16-yard scoring throw with 12 seconds remaining in the first half.

Navarre accounted for the only touchdown in the second half by throwing a 53-yarder to Ronald Bellamy on the Wolverines' first possession of the third quarter.
