Tampa Bay 8, NY Yankees 4

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- After falling behind early, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays scored four times against Roger Clemens in the second inning Friday night en route to an 8-4 victory over the New York Yankees.

Clemens retired Toby Hall to open the inning, but Randy Winn walked, Aubrey Huff singled and Russ Johnson was hit by a pitch. Chris Gomez plated Winn and Huff with a double to get the Devil Rays within 3-2.

One batter later, Clemens surrendered another two-run double, this time from Jason Tyner, that gave the Devil Rays a 4-3 lead.

Clemens (20-3), who is the leading candidate for an unprecedented sixth Cy Young Award, allowed five runs -- four runs -- and five hits in five innings. He lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

After Clemens was lifted, manager Joe Torre opted to go with Sterling Hitchcock in middle relief. Hitchcock, who pitched a complete game Monday against the White Sox, retired the side in order in the sixth but allowed three runs in the seventh.

Devil Rays rookie starter Joe Kennedy (7-8) gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings. He has won four straight decisions, the second most in franchise history.

Victor Zambrano allowed two hits over three scoreless innings and notched his second save in six chances.

Tampa Bay (61-99), which is trying to avoid becoming the first major league team since the 1996 Tigers to lose 100 games, has won 10 of its last 14 games.
