Montreal 8, NY Mets 6

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Vladimir Guerrero's two-run triple in the fourth inning triggered a five-run outburst Friday night as the Montreal Expos downed the New York Mets, 8-6.

Guerrero belted a 1-2 pitch from Mets starter Al Leiter (11-11) into right field, scoring Peter Bergeron and Jose Vidro. Prior to that trip to the plate, Guerrero was hitless in 23 at bats against Leiter.

Orlando Cabrera and Lee Stevens drove in two runs apiece as the Expos won for just the fourth time in their last 12 games.

Despite allowing four runs and 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings, Montreal's starter Mike Thurman (9-11) notched his second win in his last four starts. He walked one, struck out two and is 2-1 in four career starts against New York.

Leiter retired the first nine batters before the Expos broke through in the fourth. The lefthander allowed eight runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking nobody.
