Four of the cities are vying for their first Olympics but Rome was the site of the 1960 Games and Tokyo was the host for the Summers Olympics four years later. Tokyo was selected for the 1940 Games but those were canceled because of World War II.

Organizing committees representing the cities must submit a questionnaire to the IOC by February and the IOC Executive Board is to list the final applicant cities next May. The 2020 host city will be determined in a vote Sept. 7, 2013, at an IOC meeting in Buenos Aires.

The 2012 Games will be contested in London and the 2016 Summer Olympics were awarded to Rio de Janeiro.
