WASHINGTON, March 25 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin has been contracted by the U.S. Navy to construct the third Littoral Combat Ship as part of the next-generation surface combat-ship program.

The Navy's Littoral Combat Ships are smaller, more maneuverable surface ships designed for combat operations close to the shore and also humanitarian relief missions. Officials said the Lockheed Martin team also included Gibbs & Cox as the design agent for the Navy's first two Littoral Combat Ships.

"Gibbs & Cox is proud to be a member of the Lockheed Martin LCS team, and we are committed to the U.S. Navy's LCS program," Kevin Moak, Gibbs & Cox chairman, said in a statement.
