CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, San Diego has contracted ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ:VSAT) to provide Multifunctional Information Distribution System terminals.

SPAWAR contracted California-based ViaSat for approximately $2.97 million to supply low-volume MIDS terminals, or MIDS LVT.

Officials say the MIDS LVT provide military units with a non-satellite tactical radio technology that "collects data from many sources and displays an electronic overview of the battlefield using secure, high-capacity, jam-resistant digital data and voice," the release said.

Under the announced SPAWAR contract, ViaSat will provide a ground-based MIDS LVT, or LVT(11) variant, which company officials say offers a voice capability to the terminal technology.

ViaSat, a satellite and other digital communication technology developer, is the only U.S. military-approved manufacturer of the LVT(11) terminals.
