Illinois-based Navistar announced the launch of a new application for its International 5000 Series platform, which provides capabilities to transport the Iraqi military's heavy equipment with tractor trailer add-ons. Officials say the new applications include the ability to transport Iraq's Russian T-72 tanks, a Soviet-era designed main battle tank.

The expanded applications are part of an $11 million contract from the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, Life Cycle Management Command. Under the deal, Navistar Defense was expected to address the Iraqi military's transporter and trailer combination and spare-parts requirements.

"Navistar's strong performance in rapidly providing quality vehicles and reliable service to defend against evolving threats has positioned us as a leader in the defense industry," Bob Walsh, Navistar Defense vice president, said in a statement.

"We will continue to leverage our design and manufacturing expertise and explore new vehicle applications to help meet the mission needs of the U.S. military and its allies."
