NEWARK, N.Y., July 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department has contracted Ultralife Corp. for the company's battery technologies with state-of-charge indicators.

Under an $11 million deal, New York-based Ultralife will supply the Defense Department with its BA-5390 batteries.

Ultralife's BA-5390 batteries are part of a lithium-manganese dioxide technology designed to support military applications including communications equipment, imaging devices and weapons systems. Officials say the batteries are capable of operation in extreme temperatures and conditions.

The Defense Department BA-5390 batteries deal represents a release under a five-year contract awarded from 2004. Officials say the BA-5390 battery shipments will begin in October.
