WESTMINSTER, Md., July 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) Robotic Systems to support Littoral Combat Ships with launch and recovery technology.

The contract from the Office of Naval Research is for General Dynamics to develop a common launch and recovery system through the use of the company's automation technologies.

Officials say the automated launch and recovery technology will support unmanned maritime systems from the Littoral Combat Ships, including unmanned boats, among other water-based vehicles.

"This contract allows the Navy to leverage our naval robotic and automation capabilities as well as our extensive experience in unmanned systems development to provide value-added, reliable products that support their mission profiles." Phil Cory, General Dynamics Robotic Systems vice president, said in a statement.
