NEW ORLEANS, July 18 (UPI) -- The Mexican navy has contracted Textron Marine & Land Systems for the production of search-and-rescue boats.

Under the $24 million contract, Textron Marine & Land Systems will supply six 47-foot caterpillar-powered motor lifeboats in support of Mexican navy search-and-rescue operations in national waters and along coastlines.

TM&LS, a Textron Systems operating unit, says work on the contract is already under way at the company's New Orleans production facilities, with deliveries expected over the next two years.

"The Mexican navy is moving to create an agency much like the United States Coast Guard, and acquiring our proven, effective, safe and efficient search-and-rescue Motor Life Boat will bring their capabilities to the highest possible level," Tom Walmsley, TM&LS general manager, said in a statement.

"This boat is perfectly matched to search-and-rescue duty in all types of weather conditions, due to its ability to right itself if overturned in rough seas. We're proud of the service this boat has given the United States Coast Guard over the last 13 years."
