WASHINGTON, March 29 (UPI) -- American Science and Engineering said Monday it had won a $17.5 million U.S. government order for new X-ray security systems.
AS&E, a leader in X-ray detection technology, said the deal was "to provide service and maintenance for multiple Z® Backscatter Van ZBV X-ray Inspection Systems.
The company said it won the first part of the contract, which was worth $11 million, in September 2006.
"With this latest service contract, the U.S. Government will continue to receive the highest quality technical support for their fleet of ZBVs," said Anthony Fabiano, the company's president and CEO.
"This Phase Two order is a testament to our Field Service organization --ensuring that the ZBVs are operating in peak condition for the U.S. government's critical counter-terrorism missions overseas. As the number one selling non-intrusive mobile inspection system, the ZBV provides our customers with unparalleled detection and mobility for a variety of security applications," Fabiano said.
A&E said it s backscatter van was "a breakthrough in X-ray detection technology." The company described the product as "a low-cost, highly mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats, and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspections. The system's unique 'drive-by' capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects."
