Israel launches networked border data base

HAIFA, Israel, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The Israeli Police Tuesday launched a new nationwide border security network covering land crossings as well as harbors and airports.

The ROTEM system was deployed by Elbit Systems and ties together various government and security agencies with a robust name-recognition search engine.

Elbit said in a news release that the search engine, known as Soundex, which locates names in a database using the sound of the name rather than the spelling. The process delivers names that sound similar but have different spellings.

The system is also highly secure and survivable against cyber-attacks while at the same time making it easier for personnel in the field to update the databases.

ROTEM taps into various databases so that border personnel will have multiple options when dealing with people entering or leaving Israel. The result should be faster movement of legitimate travelers and imports through the heavily fortified border, and a better likelihood of catching unwanted individuals as they enter and leave Israel.

"ROTEM is designed to address the country's changing security and civilian needs, enabling dynamic management of border control, providing an integrated border control and management system for processing passengers and vehicles at the various border points," Elbit said.
