The world's largest retailer was out of business for about half an hour Monday afternoon, when Amazon.com's website and mobile apps went out of commission.
Amazon's outage, which lasted from approximately 2:45 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. ET, was the third crash of a major online site in a week: the New York Times experienced more than an hour of downtime last Wednesday, and Google, along with Gmail and YouTube, were dark for about five minutes Friday.
While Amazon has not offered any explanation for the downtime, its Amazon Web Services dashboard and compute cloud listed error messages.
"We are currently experiencing elevated error rates for the AWS Management Console," Amazon said, and with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon said it was "investigating increased API error rates and latencies for tagging related API calls in the US-EAST-1 region" in Northern Virginia.
Amazon rakes in more than $100,000 per minute, according to 2012 estimates, meaning the brief outage may have cost the company some $5 million in revenue.
