The fifth anniversary of Apple's App Store is Wednesday, and to celebrate, the tech giant is giving away some of the store's most popular items for free.

Ten of the most popular apps normally sold from a few dollars to as much as $19.99 have been marked down to $0 -- and have shot to the top of the app store charts, to boot.

The app store hit an impressive 50 billion downloads back in May, and in June, paid more than $10 billion to developers.

Those milestones, and others, were commemorated in an App Store timeline that stretched from the store's debut (July 10, 2008, with 500 apps) to its first 100 million downloads (September 9, 2008) and its first billion (April 4, 2009).

Apple hasn't said how long the apps will stay free, but Max Whitby, the CEO of Touch Press, said its app, Barefoot World Atlas, would be free all week.

The ten free apps are:

1.Barefoot World Atlas, normally $4.99 2.Traktor DJ, normally $19.99 3.Infinity Blade II, normally $6.99 4.Tiny Wings, normally $0.99 5.Where's My Water?, normally $0.99 6.How to Cook Everything, normally $4.99 iPhone, $9.99 iPad 7.Over, normally $1.99 8.Badland, normally $1.99 9.Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP, normally $4.99 10.Day One, normally $4.99
