By Matt Bradwell

ATLANTA, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Technology industry giant Google is expected to announce plans to expand its fiber Internet and cable-style services to four new cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh and Nashville according to information obtained by The Wall Street Journal.

Google contacted local media outlets in each of the four cities in question to announce a pair of duel press conferences Tuesday and Wednesday, but did not provide a reason for the event.

Citing two sources "familiar with the situation," The Wall Street Journal reports the press conferences will be to announce Google Fiber's expansion, and Google has updated fiber's official website to reflect the new cities.

In February, Google announced it was considering 34 cities to expand Fiber service to. That number was soon whittled down to nine: Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Phoenix, Portland, Ore. and San Jose in addition to the four cities that appear poised to be chosen. Google has reportedly told representatives from some of those communities they are still in consideration for.

"The message was that these announcements should not be considered the end of the road for the other areas," David Vossbrink, a spokesman for San Jose said.

Google Fiber first launched in Kansas City in 2012, before later expanding to Austin and Provo.
